Calling all Acorn aficionados, enthusiasts, and oak-nut neophytes: to celebrate the fall of them! Sunday November 6th from 1-4pm come to share acorn lore, forest food, and FUN again at D Acres Permaculture Farm and Educational Homestead. Activities will include a D Acres tour/acorn gathering walk, acorn processing tools, hands-on demonstrations, & further resources.
There will be acorn foods & beverages to sample, recipes to share, Acorn-Oak Art Exhibit, contests & prizes for the biggest acorn & littlest acorn, and Golden Acorn Treasure Hunt. There will also be oak and acorn products for sale.
1:00PM: We start with a walk-through of beautiful paths at D Acres. We will identify how to tell a “good” (for eating) acorn from a “bad” one, tools, and techniques for gathering efficiently with a light footprint. We’ll also look for & discuss culinary and medicinal mushrooms that favor growing near or on oaks, and products you can make, sell and enjoy from this tree.
1:30-3:00PM: Demonstrations of acorn processing and storage methods, using equipment found in most households.
3:00-3:30 PM: Acorn Food & Beverages tastings include: bread, crackers, cookies, a gravy for Thanksgiving, and acorn coffee. The Golden Acorn Hunt commences, and participants are invited to view the Acorn-Oak Art Exhibit and submit entries for the Biggest and Littlest Acorn contest.
3:30-4:00 PM: Wrap up and Closing Blessing
WHAT TO BRING: ACORNS (if you have them, be sure to store your acorns in baskets so they can continue to dry more tips here). Dress for the weather (& bring a mask for inside – just in case). We’ll have acorns to work with, but you are encouraged to bring acorns you have gathered elsewhere for evaluation (& to use the Cooperative’s Davebilt Nutcracker to process).

- Acorn drawing / painting / photo (please bring in a frame that can stand on table)
